Obituary of Donald C. Scharping Mr. Scharping was born November 15, 1925 in Albion, a son of Charles and Ethel (Morton) Scharping. He was a lifetime resident of both Lyndonville and Holley in Orleans County. He served on board the U.S.S. Merrick in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre; his duty took him from the Hawaiian Islands and Pearl Harbor through Australia, the Philippines, the New Hebrides Islands, Eniwetok, Kwajalein and finally to the Sea of Japan. He served as a member of the Navy Scouts and Raiders, a predecessor to the Navy Seals. He returned home in May of 1946; he and his sweetheart Beverly had met on neighboring farms as teenagers and they married on Sept. 7 of that year. Mr. Scharping had worked for over 20 years as a supervisor at the Frame Center at Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, retiring from there in the late 1980s. A member of the Medina Post of the American Legion, he had a life-long love of hunting and fishing.
