It's with heavy hearts and loving memories that we’ve just learned of Dr. Fran Murphy's passing. Fran wasn't just a teacher ... he was a life coach for the soul, armed with wit and wisdom and an endless repertoire of tales ... most of which were true.
Fran dedicated most of his life to education, shaping the lives of countless students, colleagues, and communities. He was a principal, school superintendent, and college professor and dean. Among his many school leadership roles, he served as Director of the International School of Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia. He later trained school superintendents across numerous states, always championing leadership, integrity, and the power of education.
Fran was more than just an academic and leader. He was also a Renaissance man, an endurance athlete, a licensed sailor, and, most importantly, a proud father and grandfather. He lived his life with energy, passion, and love. Whether in Western New York or St. Petersburg, Florida, Fran filled every space he occupied with his booming laugh, infectious energy, and stories that could turn even mundane moments into unforgettable adventures.
As a teacher, Fran didn't just teach; he mentored. He didn't just inform; he transformed. His students, colleagues, and friends walked away a little brighter and happier, buoyed by his relentless belief in the power of humor, kindness, and education to change the world.
Fran leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and an extensive list of dreams and goals he inspired in others. He is survived by his wife Lisa, sons Sean Murphy, Petar Kodzas, and Herb Drayton, daughter Bardha Varfaj, daughters in law Melissa Murphy, Ines Draskovic and Laurel Drayton, son in law, Chris Kelly, brother, Neil Murphy, sisters Kathy Murphy and Joanne Riccardi, grandchildren Ela, Kennedy, Connor, Liam, Izzy, Fable and Chris, brother in law Charlie Holmes and his family, countless nieces and nephews, precious neighbors and his cherished friends, along with the indelible mark he left on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In Fran's honour, let's not mourn his passing but celebrate his remarkable life... preferably with dose friends, good food, a funny story, a hearty laugh, and maybe a glass of something Fran would have enthusiastically approved of.
Rest easy, Fran. You taught us well, loved us thoroughly, and made us laugh until we cried. You’ve left the stage, but your stories will live on forever. And, knowing you, you’re already regaling the heavens with Irish jokes and tales that will have the angels in stitches. With fond remembrance, Nicky and Ian...
Fran’s arrangements have been entrusted to the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home of Albion, NY.
