Obituary of Herbert E. Calkins (Canandaigua/Murray)
Herbert E. “Red” Calkins, age 93 formerly of Murray, died 8/28/2016 in Thompson Hospital following a brief illness. Herb “Red” was born 7/19/1923 in Canton, NY to Herbert Eugene and Minnie(Hughes)Calkins and had lived in this area most of his life. Mr. Calkins was a United States Army Veteran of WWII having served 400 + days on the front line as an Infantryman in Africa, Italy, France and in Germany where he was captured. As a Prisoner of War, he was also awarded the Purple Heart. Herb “Red” was a Life Member of the Holley VFW, enjoyed fixing lawn mowers, camping, boating, fishing, 4 wheelers, snow mobiles and was an outstanding horseshoe player. He also took pride in raising a first class vegetable garden. Throughout his many trials in life and his service to our Country, he never lost his sense of humor. Mr. Calkins was predeceased by his wife Mary, his brother: George, his sisters: Catherine and Anna, his son: Herbert A. Sr., his grandson: Herbert A. Jr., and his significant other: Luthera Schultz. He is survived by his son: Dennis(Valerie)Calkins of Canandaigua, daughters: Mary Furness and Georgianna(Gerald)Muhs both of Kendall, 15 grandchildren, several great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc. 21 West Avenue-Albion, THURSDAY from 5-8 p.m. where his Funeral Service will be held FRIDAY at 11 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Mt. Albion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY, 41076.
