Obituary of James E Ging James Edward Ging III, of Byron, NY, died peacefully of natural causes at the Leo Center for Caring in Rochester, NY, on Nov. 21, 2013. Jim was born at home in Rochester, NY, the only child of James E Ging II (Kellyburg, PA) and Ione Hollinger Ging (Oak Orchard, NY). Jim spent most of his childhood in Rochester, except for a brief period when Depression-era unemployment forced his parents to take jobs as a short-order cook and waitress at a diner in Dansville, NY.
Growing up, Jim's extended family included a large number of aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of the family, including his best friend and cousin, Kenneth Hollinger, Jr. As a teenager, Jim enjoyed extended visits to his father's family in Pennsylvania, where he hunted deer and other wild game. Jim attended Rochester's East High School, where his poor eye sight prevented him from playing his favorite sport, baseball. He instead joined the wrestling and fencing teams. In 1944, still in high school, Jim attempted to enlist in the Army, but was rejected due to poor eye sight. He was able to successfully enlist in the Navy by memorizing the eye chart while waiting in line for his pre-induction physical. Jim was stationed in Brooklyn as part of the North Atlantic Fleet, but did not see combat duty before WWII ended.
Jim returned to East High to complete his education, where he met Diane Edwina Jewell. They were married on August 20, 1949. After briefly running his own collection agency, Jim joined Lincoln Rochester Bank (later Chase Bank) as a teller, where he spent the remainder of his professional career, subsequently attaining the rank of AVP and Branch Manager in Brockport and North Chili, NY. In the early years of his marriage, Jim often worked a second job to make ends meet. These included counting money at Batavia Downs, serving as a temporarily appointed deputy to Orleans County Sheriff Jack Williams, cutting meat at the Albion Loblaws, and assisting in the evening management of the Brockport Strand Theater.
Jim's volunteer activities included serving for years as Treasurer of the Murray Baptist Church, where he was a member, Treasurer of the Brockport Salvation Army, member of the Brockport Rotary, a Boy Scout leader in the Kendall, NY area, and a long-time member of the board for Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport. His life-long hobbies included raising dogs, hunting pheasants, and fishing. As a young man, he also enjoyed playing guitar and singing.
Jim and Diane were married for more than 30 years and raised five children in Murray and East Gaines (Orleans County), NY. All of the children survive: Terence McGinn, David, Linda Golden, Timothy (Kathy), and Judy (Oula Nahas). Diane died of cancer in 1981. Several years later, Jim met and married Vivian Malison, with whom he spent more than 25 happy retirement years in Byron, New York. They lived on a wooded property and enjoyed observing all forms of nature from their back window. Over the years, Jim had a series of surgeries and procedures related to severe cardiovascular disease. He was nonetheless able to remain physically independent until shortly before his death. In addition to his second wife and his children, Jim is survived by six grandchildren: Nicole Thomson (Derek), Melissa Harding (Shane Treanor), James D. Ging, Sara Ging, Danielle Nahas and Amanda Nahas.
Jim will be buried near relatives in Mt. Albion Cemetery. His family will celebrate Jim's life privately at a later date.
