Obituary of The Rev. John H. Guenther Hilton: The Rev. John H. Guenther, 96, died peacefully July 4, 2016.
The Rev. John H. Guenther has had a varied career. He served as a naval officer in WW II, from 1943 until 1945 and retired from the Navy in 1946. His next career was as an engineering manager at Stromberg Carlson in Rochester where he worked until 1972.
He was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1968 and became a Priest in 1972. From 1973 to 1982 he served as Chaplin at the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester where he also had the opportunity to mentor a number of seminary students. He then did supply work for the Diocese of Rochester.
Fr. Guenther became interim Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Holley on January 1, 1989, and served as Rector and interim Rector. In 1991 St. Paul’s embarked on a building program to make the church more accessible to the handicapped. In order to install a lift (elevator) an addition was built. Fr. Guenther worked tirelessly with the architect in drawing up the plans and bringing the project to completion. He also designed the ramp which was built at the downstairs entrance.
From June 25 to 30, 1995 Fr. Guenther and his wife Rev. Nancy Guenther, served as chaplains at the Finger Lakes Conference at Hobart and William Smith Colleges at Geneva, NY.
Fr. Guenther enjoyed playing the Bassoon in the Brockport Symphony Orchestra. Retirement gave Fr. Guenther the opportunity to explore the art of cross-stitching and to travel internationally. He took great joy in being a grandparent.
Fr. Guenther is survived by his wife, The Rev. Nancy Guenther; Christopher (Maureen) Guenther, Timothy (Monica) Guenther, Friedrich (Judith) Kruchten, Patrick (Susan) Kruchten, Holly North; 9 grandchildren; sister, Edythe Drummond.
Fr. Guenther’s Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2 Jackson St. Holley, NY, on Saturday August 20, at 3:00pm.
