Joseph R. Miller, Jr, 93, Brockport, NY, and former longtime resident of Shelby, NC, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2022, in the presence of two of his daughters, Suzanne and Robin Jo.
Joe was born July 5, 1928, in Chester, PA, the only child of Joseph R. and Susan (Bramble) Miller. Joe received his Bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania Military College, served in active Army from 1946-49, and continued his military career in the Army Reserves retiring as a Major.
Joe also was employed by E.I. DuPont for over 30 years serving in various positions including Administrative Site Manager, Shelby, NC., and Manager, Human Resources, PDO-US at Kings Mountain, NC.
During his 33 years as a resident in Shelby, Joe was very active in the community serving as a past Chairman of the board of the United Way, interim Director of the Cleveland County Arts Council, board member on Council of the Aging, advisory board member of the Salvation Army, advisory board member of the Life Enrichment Center, member of the Kiwanis Club, and was an active member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, the first Dean of the college of elders, and Sunday School Bible studies facilitator.
Joe was predeceased in 2003 by his faithful, loving wife of 53 years, Antoinette (Dolly) Miller.
Joe is survived by his 3 daughters, Suzanne (John) Buckingham, Watertown, NY, Nanette (Kenneth) Ledford, Shelby, NC, Robin Jo (Mark) Zaczek, Albion, NY, 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
As a younger man, Joe enjoyed golfing, bowling, and fishing. Until shortly before his passing, he remained a very avid reader, with history and politics being his main interest. Joe also had many interesting stories to share about growing up, his time in the military and with DuPont.
Interment will be at Lawncroft Cemetery, Linwood, PA, with a celebration of life in the spring in Shelby, NC at the convenience of the family.
