Obituary of Katherine Doherty Daniel Katherine VanAernam Doherty Daniel, 70, of Redondo Beach, California, died May 7, 2015 under hospice care in Encinitas, California. Kathy was born July 22, 1944 in Buffalo to Hamilton and Betty McCausland Doherty. The family lived in Buffalo through World War II, moved to Eagle Harbor in 1950 and the Village of Albion in 1960. She attended the Eagle Harbor and Waterport Schools and graduated from Albion High School in 1962. Kathy attended Syracuse University and Hunter College. In June of 1965, she married William W. Daniel, Jr and they lived in New York City and Cambridge, MA, where their 2 children were born. After teaching in special education, she completed her BSN at Boston University. In 1976 Kathy moved to the Los Angeles area and started a 35 plus year career with the UCLA Medical Center while completing her MSN degree. She was a critical care nurse, and was particularly proud of her years as a nurse educator in the early 1980's for the groundbreaking HIV/AIDS medical and research programs. Kathy also worked in ICU, med-surgical services and in the home health service. She was recognized many times by her peers as a compassionate patient advocate and nurse mentor. For almost twenty years Kathy was a steward, bargaining representative and board member of the California Nurses' Association. She is survived by her son, Peter (Luz) and granddaughters Saige and Ava of Milbrae, CA; and daughter Sarah (Jeff) Givens and granddaughters Elysse and Emily of Carlsbad, CA; her brothers Hamilton, "Chip" (Karen), Kevin (Linda), and Stephen (Heidi); nieces, nephews and cousins. Inurnment will be at Mount Albion at the convenience of the family.
