Obituary of Laverne R. Smith Basom: Laverne R. Smith, age 84, passed away unexpectedly on May 17, 2019 at United Memorial Hospital in Batavia. He was born October 13, 1934 in Middleport to the late Almon and Lillian (Wagner) Smith. Laverne enjoyed spending his time camping, riding his lawnmower, feeding birds and watching wildlife. He loved traveling all over the U.S. and Canada with his late wife Marilou who he took care of for many years and his golden retrievers. Laverne was a retiree of Harrison Radiator where he worked for 38 years. He loved and hated the Buffalo Bills depending on how their season was going. Laverne was an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Wolcottsville since he was a young boy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Marilou on November 7, 2012, son Rodney in 2014 and several of his siblings. Laverne is survived by his children, Randy Smith, Rebecca (Michael) Cherry, Rosalie (Richard) Robinson, five grandchildren, Michael (Cara) Robinson, Adam Smith, Heather (Tim) Pahuta, Benjamin (Alicia Rohan) Cherry, Jessica (Ashlee Dow) Cherry, three great-grandchildren, Lola Robinson, Audrey Pahuta, Justin Smith, siblings, Evelyn Ribbeck, Donald Smith, Gordon (Sandy) Smith, several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Bates, Wallace & Heath Funeral Home, 38 State St. Middleport, NY 14105 on Tuesday, May 21st from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00pm. Laverne’s funeral service will be held at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church 6379 Wolcottsville Road Akron, NY 14001 on Wednesday at 1:00pm. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery.
