Obituary of Marie C. Dailey Marie Therese Carr Dailey of Albion passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2016, in Highland Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by her loving family. Born on New Year's Day 1933 in New York City to Halsey and Margaret Carr, Marie grew up in New York City but after marrying Albion native John Dailey in 1958, made Albion and Orleans County her home several times, including since 1995.
Marie had a rich life, both professionally and personally. After graduating School of the Holy Child in New York City (where she had been elected president of the student body), she attended College of Mt. St. Vincent in Riverdale, New York. While there, she dabbled in modeling, which led her to be chosen cover girl for Mademoiselle magazine (August 1952). A top student, she graduated College of Mt. St. Vincent as an English and French major with honors in 1953. She worked in the then-nascent public relations business in New York City (including for Shell Oil) when she met her future husband, John M. Dailey, of Albion, a Harvard Law graduate who was then a successful harness driver. They married in 1958 and settled into Brockport, where they started their family. Marie was primarily a homemaker for the next 20 years as the family moved between Brockport, Albion and Westchester County, New York. As her children hit their teen years and the family moved to New York City, she started teaching in the New York City school system, including in schools in the Bronx and Staten Island. She and John retired to Albion in 1995, where Marie continued her service work for others by serving on the Board of Trustees for the Hoag Library in Albion and on the Historic Preservation Commission for the Village of Albion, among other things. Anyone who met Marie for even a minute felt her warmth and love and sharp sense of humor. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, and lived its theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, as well as its messages of love, humility, fortitude and selflessness. She was an incredibly wise woman, who would listen closely to others’ problems and issues and then usually share with them very thoughtful and sage pearls of wisdom. Marie loved her children but adored her grandchildren, who reveled in and thrived under her love and kindness. Never did a Christmas or birthday or other special event pass by without a generous and thoughtful present from "Nana" arriving well ahead of time (and typically before all others’). Marie was a beautiful person both inside and out, and will greatly missed by her family and friends.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, Halsey and Margaret Carr. She is survived by her husband, John; her sons, John, James and William; her daughters-in-law, Angela, Eileen and Kris; and her grandchildren, James, Meghan, Mary, Julia, William, Caroline and John.
There are no prior calling hours. Marie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, Albion. A reception will follow at the Lyceum. Private interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hoag Library of Albion (http://www.hoaglibrary.org/) or to Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, Albion (http://www.holyfamilyalbion.com/).
