Mary M. Shuler, age 85, died peacefully in her home on November 6, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was born January 9, 1937 in her family’s home on Culver Rd. in Barre to Leslie and Doris (Ballard) Narburgh and was a life-long resident of this area.
Mary was a member of the Gaines Congregational Church as well as the West Barre United Methodist Church and was a Sunday School teacher in addition to being a faith-filled woman who loved her God.
She was a member of the Grange, where she and her late husband Bill used to square dance. Mary also was very active in the Orleans County Cooperative Extension 4-H program, having been a 4-H leader for many years. She published the Orleans County Cookbook for Cooperative extension, which was a collection of recipes and history from the community. She also decorated wedding cakes, catered weddings, and did Color Concepts to earn money while being a homemaker. She taught women and friends how to decorate cakes. She was a certified Master Gardener, giving garden tours, and teaching herbal classes. Mary published an herbal book. She was a certified Reiki instructor. Mary was also an active member of the Orleans County Historical Society. She was a former employee of T.J. Lipton, site manager at Boback Estates and enjoyed being a realtor for Morrison Realty in Albion. She also worked at Hurd Orchards where she made wreaths and pies. Her hobbies included scrapbooking, card making, baking, painting and gardening. She was always proud that she had won the Orleans County apple pie contest when she was younger.
Mary was a kind and gentle woman who was very generous and very giving. She had a personal desire to always help and care for the elderly. Her life reflected a caring spirit to everyone she met. But, most of all, Mary loved her family and her God. Mrs. Shuler was predeceased by her husband William, her daughter: Darlene Slocum and brothers: Gilbert and Jimmy Narburgh.
She is survived by her son: Danny (Dora Leader) Shuler, daughters: Debbie (Bob) Taylor, Deanne Shuler, grandchildren: Sean Robertson, Jenni (Brian) Ingersol, Sonya (Andrew) Martino, Danielle (Jeff) LaMartina, Jill (Aaron) Barnes, Danny (Janelle) Shuler, Joanna Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Daniel Taylor, James Moses III, Kolton Kuek, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, her brother: Bob Narburgh as well as several nieces and nephews.
There will no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend Mary’s Celebration of Life, Saturday November 19th at 11:00 am in West Barre United Methodist Church, 5377 Eagle Harbor Rd., Albion, NY, 14411. Interment will be in West Barre Cemetery. Memorials may be made to West Barre United Methodist Church at the address above or the Gaines Congregational Church, 14023 Ridge Road, Albion, NY, 14411.
