Obituary of Roger Hubert Winner Roger H. Winner passed away peacefully on Monday October 10, 2011 at Niagara Hospice in Lockport, New York after a brief illness. Born in Gasport, NY on June 26, 1926 he was the son of the late G. Hubert Winner and Julia Hull Winner. On November 20, 1948 he was united in marriage to Doris Langenbacher. Roger was a 1943 graduate of Gasport High School and proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He attended the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology, majoring in retailing and interior design. He worked as Civil Defense Director for Niagara County from 1953 to 1961, before moving on to work for the New York State Civil Defense Commission from 1966 until his retirement in 1989 as a Region Director with the New York State Emergency Management Office. During his time as Region Director, he coordinated the state’s response to numerous disasters including Hurricane Agnes in 1972, the Blizzard of ’77 and the Love Canal in Niagara Falls. He was a life member of the Gasport Chemical Hose Company, having served in many capacities including Fire Chief and President, as well as commissioner with the Gasport Fire District No. 1. Roger served on the board of directors for the Dale Association, Lockport, NY and was instrumental in the oversight and completion of several expansion projects of their facilities. A communicant of Christ Episcopal Church, he served as a member of the church Vestry. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dearly loved and sadly missed by family and friends; he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris Winner; three sons, Stephen (Diane) of Rush, NY, Roger S. (Julie) of Brockport, NY and Douglas (Theresa) of Gasport; three daughters, Pamela (Fred) Peek of Penn Yan, NY, Lisa Stockwell of Victor, NY and Cynthia (Bill) Ames of DeMotte, IN; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren and a sister, Joan Genet. He was predeceased by sisters Jane and Joyce and his beloved grandson, Joseph. Though no longer with us, Roger‘s legacy is indelibly imprinted with his energy, strength, resilience, and attention to detail. It resonates with all those who were touched by his good works through the years.
